We actually have a Cisco MSSP agreement (Managed Security Services Provider) to sell Cisco Umbrella.

Can you please advise if it is possible to run Cisco Umbrella and Viscosity together?

Particularly if we are running an Umbrella VA configuration?

Hi Dave,

Viscosity will seamlessly deactivate Cisco Umbrella when connected, and then reactive it when disconnected. I'm afraid the two can't operate at the same time but they can co-exist.

Viscosity has a free 30 day trial, we recommend you give it a go to see if it suits your purposes.

Eric

Hello Sparklabs,

Was this compatibility issue ever fixed ? We are using Version 1.10.5 for Windows and seeing similar issues, once the VPN connection is established, Viscosity seems to be changing the DNS Servers for all Adapters.

But we do not see the same issue with Mac's using Version 1.10.6 and Umbrella.

Are there any work arounds for Version 1.10.5 for Windows ?

Hi,

Viscosity and Cisco Umbrella can be used at the same time, but "Full DNS" mode cannot. This is because Umbrella is a DNS Proxy, and attempts to set its DNS servers on the computer. If you're using Full DNS Viscosity needs to set your VPN DNS servers to be the primary DNS servers, and so there is a clash. It's easy to work-around depending on what behaviour you want:

1. If you want your VPN DNS servers to be used for all lookups, use Full DNS. Viscosity will automatically disable the Umbrella service while connected, and enable it again when the VPN connection is disconnected. You can find information on the available DNS modes and how to change them at:
https://www.sparklabs.com/support/kb/ar ... #dns-modes

2. If you want Umbrella's DNS settings to be used while connected, but your VPN DNS servers to still be used for lookups associated with the VPN interface, use Full DNS as the DNS mode and enable the "Use Windows DNS System for Full DNS" option. Umbrella will remain active while connected, and the VPN DNS settings will be set on the VPN interface only.
https://www.sparklabs.com/support/kb/ar ... /#advanced

We generally recommend against using "Use Windows DNS System for Full DNS", as it can result in DNS lookups being sent outside the VPN connection to your normal DNS servers (in this case Umbrella's DNS servers), which may catch some admins off guard. More information about this can be found at:
https://www.sparklabs.com/support/kb/ar ... -homed-dns

3. If you want Umbrella's DNS settings to be used for all lookups, set the DNS mode to Disabled. Umbrella will remain active while connected.

Umbrella on macOS operates differently, and does not attempt to override Viscosity's DNS settings when Full DNS is in use.
