DNS and Surface Pro X
Got a problem with Viscosity or need help? Ask here!
Hi There,
I'm using Viscosity on my Surface Pro X to connect to my Linux VM, which is running OpenVPN server and pi-hole. Everything works, except that Viscosity doesn't pull in the DNS IP addresses that I've specified in /etc/openvpn/server/server.conf through the directives:
push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1"
push "dhcp-option DNS 1.1.1.1"
If I enter 10.8.0.1 in Viscosity->Edit Connection->Networking->DNS: Servers, it works, but I would prefer not to have to configure DNS manually.
My question is: Why doesn't Viscosity pull in the DNS IP addresses from the push directives, above?
I believe that DHCP is, indeed, sending 10.8.0.1 and 1.1.1.1 to my Surface Pro X, since the utility "DHCP Explorer" shows that the VPN interface is correctly getting both IP addresses.
Is it possible that there might be a bug?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Again,
I noticed that by default, OpenVPN server has this line in /etc/openvpn/server/server.conf:
push "redirect-gateway def1 bypass-dhcp"
"bypass-dhcp" certainly didn't sound like something I wanted! When I commented it out, restarted OpenVPN on Linux, and removed the manual DNS IP address that I entered in Viscosity, DNS worked.
It was my fault for not catching this earlier. Viscosity works!
I hope that this might help someone else.
Thanks,
Steve
