CreateFile failed, no TAP-adapters
Got a problem with Viscosity or need help? Ask here!
Hello,
A few days ago I tried to install Viscosity on a Windows 7 x64 system. During the very first installation, I was prompted whether I wanted to install some software (I didn't pay much attention, but I think it was the TAP drivers) and, I'm afraid, said no. Then the client wouldn't connect, so, as per the advice given, say, here
http://sparklabs.com/support/kb/article ... tap-device,
I reinstalled it - at first, with an existing installation already in place, and then, since it still wouldn't connect, first uninstalling, and then installing again. I was not prompted to install the drivers any more during any of the following installations, and, since the problem persisted, I switched to native OpenVPN - still failing in the same way. The error I get in the log is that no TAP-adapters were found, and in Device Manager they are listed, but with the error message that
I was wondering if some registry key could have been edited during the first installation and remained unchanged afterwards, causing the problems, but in the best of cases I can only guess.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)- same as the one in the link above, however, upon checking the download history, I see I already have the update recommended there installed.

Hi LWG,
Reinstalling the update in the support article then restarting your PC should resolve the issue.

Hi LWG,
Simply download the update from the Microsoft link and run it. The Microsoft installer will ensure everything is setup and installed safely for that update.

Eric

Hello,
Not sure if this is a problem with Windows or some other application, but when I try to run the update file, I get the message "Searching for updates on this computer", and then the installer hangs for indefinitely long, without even responding to the 'Cancel' button.

Hi LWG,
If an update is failing to install it's generally a mix of both. The most likely cause is AV software interfering. If possible, I would recommend booting into Safe Mode, disabling and exiting all applications and attempting to install the update there. If this fails, you may need to reinstall Windows.

Hello,
Well - even with the AV disabled, the installer still hangs as before. In safe mode, I get an error message saying 'This service cannot be started in Safe Mode.'
Is reinstalling really the next best option, and what about, say, system repair?
Thanks.

Hi LWG,
You can certainly try to do a system repair first. Ultimately though, if that update is not installed correctly for Windows 7 (Windows 8 and above will not have this issue), the operating system does not recognise the signature on the driver which is required for newer operating systems and closes a security risk.

Hi LWG,
At this point we'd recommend contacting your System Administrator or preferred PC Repairer for advise as any decision involves more than just Viscosity.
